Prioritizing wellness and self care in your day-to-day lives

Importance of wellness

Evidently, your emotional and physical health go hand-in-hand. Feeling good on the inside reflects on the outside and vice versa. 

Practicing self-care is simply paying attention to yourself, your body and mind. In return, you feel good mentally and emotionally with a sense of peace. You get to know yourself and you can practice self awareness simultaneously, which will improve your ability to cope and manage emotions, stress and other unsettling feelings.

Forms of self-care

Self care can come in many forms – those that care for your appearance and physical body and those that care for your peace of mind. Of course, these are interrelated. 

Whether you’re feeling great or under the weather, you can practice these exercises anywhere, at any time. Remember, just because you feel okay does not mean that self-care activities will be pointless.

Self care for your body 

  • Walks or jogs in nature
  • Pampering 
  • Getting your hair done
  • Skincare
  • Taking a nap
  • Going to the gym
  • Yoga
  • Stretching

 

Self care for your mind

  • Reading 
  • Mindfulness and meditation
  • Visualization 
  • Imagination 
  • Brain exercises
  • Yoga
  • Breathing exercises

These are just a few suggestions to start incorporating self care in your life. It becomes part of your routine such as brushing your teeth and washing your face. 

Finding time

Some self-care activities take time and money, such as facials and/or a massage. However, many wellness exercises are free and can be done in under 5 minutes!

You may feel physically healthy and happy, but everyone gets caught up in the rush of our constantly-moving lives. 

Where do we find time to really evaluate ourselves in how we feel, what we’re really thinking, what we really need? This is a huge part of both self-care and wellness. It’s similar to a “body scan”. Scanning your body with your mind … how do you feel physically and mentally? 

For example, a body scan can be done in under 5 minutes. A main exercise of meditation and self-care, body scans focus on connecting your mind with specific parts of your body. For example, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Pay attention to how your chest moves up and down, and how your lungs expand and collapse. 

This method brings individuals back down from the clouds our minds are often stuck in. It is also a great method to promote calmness and relaxation, especially in states of irritation and/or stress.

Prioritize yourself

Remember that doing things for yourself isn’t a waste of time, and even if you think that way, what’s five minutes of self-care compared to the hours you put into work and school?

I know it gets difficult to find time .. let alone be consistent. However, this is something to incorporate into your everyday routine for YOU, not as a work, school or other responsibility. 

Ultimately, the return is a huge value. Practicing self care improves your emotional stability and management. This means that you can better handle your stress, irritation, anger etc. 

If you feel motivated out of responsibility, then think of it this way: You are responsible for yourself and your own growth right? So take control of it, only you can foster and support your own wellbeing and healing.
